EXTREMELY SMALL BUT VERY LOUD

EXTREMELY SMALL BUT VERY LOUD
RMIT Brunswick Design District
Awarded RMIT University Master of Architecture Awards for Design Excellence 2022
The project attempts to redeem Melbourne’s middling recent history of design, at the scale of precinct, through turning the orthodox order of cities planning - from large infrastructure, density, zoning, program to use - upside down.
The design methodology was Inspired by RMIT’s disaggregated city campus, which has been able to exert an enormous influence over the public life of the city, not through big scale moves nor via master planning, but through a series of tactics, annexations and increments, growing from the single building of the then Working Men’s College in 1885 to today’s vital urban precinct.

Through an inventory of extremely small moves, the project observes weak spots and opportunities within Brunswick existing fabric, and attempts to speculate on agency of smallness, as a way of conquering large territory, developing and growing a vibrant ‘RMIT Design District’ in the heart of Brunswick.
